Project Tshela Proposal: Rethusilege Creche
Unit 2A is one of the Studio units offered solely to second year BArch students at University of Nottingham. It provides the rare opportunity for a live build project; in small groups, students compete and the best design for the new Rethusilege Creche in Mokomotsie Village, South Africa is developed from the initial group concept with real engineers and architects. The whole unit then raises funds for materials and travel, in order to fly over and build the nursery school over a period of 4 weeks.

MINI PROJECT: FURNITURE & TOYS
Alongside the competitive group proposal for the nursery, we were also tasked to individually design a piece of furniture or toy to inhabit the space, keeping in mind the limited availability of materials and tools. My design combined standard PVC pipe lengths and connectors with local fabrics, dowel and milk-bottle tops to create a flexible play-pen or room separator with an abacus to use as a learning tool. This was one of the 5 individual designs chosen to be built as part of the live project.
