Thesis Research: Battersea Arts Centre Analysis

Inspired by Fred Scott’s On Altering Architecture, an investigation of building ‘Continuity’ is explored through theoretical research alongside an analysis of the Battersea Arts Centre reconstruction by Haworth Tompkins. Three key ideas derived from Scott’s writing, Degrees of Intervention, Fleeting and Fixed Elements and Armature, form a new vision for Conservation; a toolkit for use on both listed and non-listed buildings as a more meaningful approach to redevelopment celebrating history, narrative and inclusivity. The toolkit is tested by mapping and understanding the 3 principles within the Battersea Arts Centre proposal through a variety of analytical drawing methods and models, and comparatively assessing the significant areas and elements of the building before and after the introduction of new interventions.
